Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is an accident insurance scheme announced by the government of India in the 2015 Budget. It is a social security scheme that provides one-year protection against accidental death and permanent disability.
Details of PMSBY
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana details are given below:
- Any person aged 18 to 70 years having a savings bank account can subscribe to the scheme.
- The savings bank account must be linked with his Aadhar.
- The scheme is a one-year cover, starting from June 1 to May 31 of the following year.
- It provides protection to its members and their families in case of accidental death and disability coverage.
- A member can renew the scheme annually. He needs to give his consent to his bank to auto-debit the premium amount every year by May 31 for the subsequent years.
- It is the cheapest accidental insurance scheme which can be subscribed by paying a premium of Rs. 20/- per annual.
- The scheme is offered by public general insurance companies and other approved general insurance companies that are willing to offer the scheme on the same terms and tie up with banks for the same purpose.
- An individual is eligible to join the scheme only from one saving bank account. He cannot join the scheme with multiple saving bank accounts.
- Individual who leaves the scheme at any point can rejoin the scheme in future years by paying the annual premium.
- The participating bank will be the master policyholder on behalf of participating subscriber (the insured person).
Benefits of PMSBY
PMSBY covers death and permanent disabilities caused by an accident. The scheme will pay you:
- In case of death, the scheme will pay the claimant/nominee/appointee a sum assured of Rs. 2 lakh.
- In case of total and irrevocable loss of both eyes or loss of use of both hands or feet or loss of sight of one eye and loss of use of hand or foot (permanent total disability), a sum assured of Rs. 2 lakh will be paid to the member (insured person)
- In case of total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye or loss of use of one hand or foot (permanent partial disability), a sum assured of Rs. 1 lakh will be paid to the member.
Note: In insurance, an accident means a sudden, unforeseen, and involuntary event caused by external, violent, and visible means.
Events Where Accident Cover Can be Terminated
The following are the events where the accidental cover shall be terminated:
- When the member (insured person) attains 70 years (age nearest birth day)
- At the time of closure of the bank account
- At the time of insufficiency of bank balance (to keep the insurance in force)
- In case the member is covered by more than one saving bank account and the premium is received by the insurance company unintentionally, then the cover shall be restricted to just one bank account and the premium shall be forfeited.
How to Subscribe to the Scheme?
You can enroll for the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana by opting for any of the following options:
- Visit the government’s Jansuraksha website to download the application form. Fill the form and submit it to the bank in which you have your savings account.
- Register via the internet banking facility of your bank.
- You can send an SMS to the onboarding organization’s toll-free number.
Documents Required to Subscribe to the Scheme
Application form: The interested person must submit the application form with the following details:
- Basic information of the applicant
- Bank/ Post office account details
- KYC details (Aadhar/PAN/ Passport etc.)
- Contact Information
- Nominee Details
- Other details
Aadhar Card Copy: In case the applicant’s bank account is not linked with Aadhar, submit a copy of the Aadhar card.

Q2. Is temporary disability covered under this scheme?
No, only accidental death and permanent (irrecoverable disabilities) are covered. Even death by suicide is excluded from the scheme.
Q3. What if the insured is missing and his death is not confirmed, can a nominee claim for the benefits?
The insurance company will pay the death benefit only when it is a confirmed death or the law presumes the person to be dead (According to law, if someone is missing for 7 years, then the person will be presumed to be dead).
Q4. What are the documents required to be submitted at the time of claim?
An insured nominee/claimant is required to submit the claim form along with the following documents:
- Proof of death/ permanent disability due to accident.
- Aadhar and PAN number (optional)
- KYC document of nominee/claimant
- Any one of the following documents of the nominee/claimant:
- Photocopy of first two pages of passport
- Photocopy of first two pages of bank statement
- Photocopy of first two pages of post office account statement
- Photocopy of the cancelled cheque
